Beautiful and Fleeting

Yesterday on my morning walk, I noticed this purple mushroom. I've never seen a purple one before; I considered that the crazy color might be caused by something other than the inherent qualities of the 'shroom. Upon googling it, I learned there is such a thing, but they are kind of rare--at least not common. I counted six of these in the same general area, beneath a water oak beside the driveway. I sent a picture to my brother, and he couldn't recall having seen these before either. Considering he lives and works on a 50,000 acre wildlife refuge, and has spent his entire life paying close attention to God's creation, I think it's pretty cool that I got to see these on my very own property.

A year or two ago, I planted a giant agapanthus at LaMama's. It has one huge bloom on it right now, about the size of a cantaloupe. I might be exaggerating a tiny bit, but seriously--it is big. The bloom is made up of lots of smaller blooms, and it is not completely open yet, but it is already gorgeous. I have included a picture below.

The chuck-will's-widow began his call last night at exactly 9 p.m. He stopped after just a few minutes, maybe two or three. Beautiful and fleeting--like so much of nature. I bet he sings like that every night, but I only recently made a point of going outside at nightfall to look and listen. It's amazing what we can experience when we are still and quiet.
