LaMama Work Day, Fall 2013
Mama and Lamar October 2011 |
Yesterday, we held the first official semi-annual LaMama Work Day. It was a beautiful late summer day, clear and warm with low humidity. Perfect for heavy yard work and family fellowship.
In advance, I prepared a list of priorities. Things like clearing deadfall left over from spring storms – heavy stuff that required a chainsaw. Once the deadfall was all cut up, we loaded it on a trailer and moved it to “Mount Brushmore,” an area away from the house, out in the woods with easy access by truck & trailer.I took some mulberry and persimmon for firewood at the cabin this winter. The diameter of this wood was small enough that it won’t be too hard to split into logs for the woodstove. But I passed on the 24-30 inch sweetgum that fell on Myra and Jolyn’s cars back in the spring. I didn’t relish the thought of splitting those huge logs for burning. I’ve learned that smaller material is better when splitting wood by hand.
We completed nearly everything on the list, making for a very productive morning. Mid-day we broke for a delicious lunch of pork tenderloin, green beans, mashed potatoes, blackberry cornbread, the most refreshing spearmint iced tea, and peanut butter chocolate chip cookies. Myra prepared the meal, except for the mashed potatoes, which Mama made. There is nothing better than enjoying a scrumptious meal after a morning of hard work.
I forgot to get a picture of us, so I’m using this picture of LaMama at Jekyll Island in October 2011.The next LaMama Work Day will be late winter or early spring next year. I’m already looking forward to it. Must remember to get a picture next time.
That's the latest from my country life. Wishing you well.
