Perfect Fall Weekend

My brother visited last weekend, and while he was here he built a simple wooden structure to fit overtop the big fake rock that covers and protects the well-pump. This gives me good workspace where before there was just wasted, unusuable space. The big wooden counter is solid and sturdy but can be easily removed for well-pump maintenance. We used materials that I already had onsite, so I didn’t spend a dime. I love being thrifty and making use of stuff I already have.

We picked muscadines on Saturday. This picture is of Jack and Jolyn pulling a mature vine down out of a maple tree as Buckshot, Jolyn's dog looks on. Muscadines are native to the southeast, and are abundant here on my property and LaMama’s. I remember picking and eating these as a child; it’s a sweet memory. Turns out they are a rich source of polyphenols and other nutrients believed to have significant health benefits. And they grow wild right here outside my door. Local, organic, and free! I’ve been eating them like candy and putting them in my smoothies, skin, seeds, and all.

After muscadine-picking, we enjoyed a southern meal cooked by Mama, one of the two best cooks I’ve ever known–the other being Grandma, her mama. After the meal, we watched the Georgia game on TV, and UGA won. It was a perfect fall weekend with family, football, good food, and ideal weather. I’m grateful.

That’s the latest from my country life. Wishing you well.
